概要
Youth Challenge to Social Innovation
-Dynamics of Leadership in the Changing Society-
世界は今、グローバリゼーションの進展やインターネットの普及により可能性の幅を急激に拡大し、めまぐるしい成長を遂げている。しかし、同時に伴う多様な変化に、人も制度も適応しきれていない。そうした中で、政府や大企業などの「大きな組織」には見過ごされがちな表面化しにくい問題、少数派の問題などには解決の糸口が見つからず、山積みするばかりである。
世界はフラット化し、多くの情報が開示され、今では個人、そして彼らの「つながり」がかつてない程に影響力を持つようになった。個人の原体験から生じた問題意識に、それを解決する意欲と使命感。達成したい世界像としてのビジョンと、各個人独自の多様なアプローチ。先ずは自分を率いて問題の解決を志す中で、個人の問題が社会の問題へと昇華し、社会を以て社会を変革するのである。このプロセスに見出される共感とリーダーシップこそが、社会を変革する原動力となることは明らかであり、今、最も必要とされている。今でこそリーダーである人々も、最初は不安な道を、自分を信じながら歩み始めた個人に過ぎない。偶然のきっかけや、触発体験から自己を変革し、社会変革への道を歩み出すのだ。
ソーシャル・イノベーションという概念は漠然とした意味を持ちつつも、独特な魅力を放ち、多くのユース、そして社会の未来を変えようとしている。今や、ホワイトハウスにはオフィス・オブ・ソーシャル・イノベーションが設立され、日本でも、社会起業家の存在やその事業に光が当てられるようになってきた。
5th U.S.-Japan Youth Forum
Since its inception in 2005, the U.S.-Japan Youth Forum has provided the unique opportunity to present the voices of our future leaders, who can think outside the box, and seek to challenge the future with new values. At the previous forum in 2008, we explored the theme"National & Multilateral commitment to vGlobal Warming," conceiving and crafting sustainable solutions,"where panelists from not only the U.S. and Japan but also from Germany and China attacked the global issue with unique approaches and values. The enthusiastic voices of the panelists and frank exchange of views incorporating the audience strongly impressed the attendants of the forum. We were especially honored to have H.I.H. Princess Takamado as one of our guests.
This year, we are proud to present the 5th U.S.-Japan Youth Forum with our focus on social innovation; perhaps a relatively new notion or idea in Japan. With globalization as well as the growing internet population, the world just keeps on expanding its potential. However, on the other hand, it is also a fact that our systems as well as the people have not been able to catch up with the changes going on too fast. It is needless to say of the commitment of international organizations and governments, although it cannot take on all of the problems, especially those of minorities, or issues that do not come to the top of our agenda lists.
In this world of massive information, the individual has become stronger. With a social cause and a strong will to solve social issues, visionary individuals start their journey as change makers, eventually making his or her social cause to that of the society, therefore changing the society by the society. With so many social issues rising in the world, social innovations are a necessity, and a leader is necessary for social innovation. It is thought that a leader is a charismatic, high skilled elite, although when we look at change making leaders of the world, they are originally ordinary people, who happened to have some kind of experience which made them realize their social cause, leading themselves to self innovation first, and then to the innovation of the society.
With that said, the mindset and the challenges of the youth are now to be taken notice of. What kind of social cause or sense of awareness do they have? Do they have a vision for the future? In the 5th U.S.-Japan Youth Forum, youth from the U.S., U.K., China, Korea, and Japan will attempt to share their thoughts, insights, values, and experiences with Social Innovation and Leadership as the center of the dialogue, sharing with us new values and fresh ideas of originality, and with confidence to change the world.
